Edith S. Windsor Bio

Edith S. Windsor is an advocate whose love, dedication, and persistence legally redefined marriage in the United States and changed the course of American history.

Following a successful career as a computer programmer, Windsor dedicated her time to volunteering for many local gay organizations, while enjoying time with her beloved spouse, Thea Spyer. Upon Spyer’s death in 2009, Windsor challenged the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), bringing her case to the Supreme Court with United States v. Windsor. On June 26, 2013, she prevailed as the Court declared Section 3 of DOMA unconstitutional.
