NYU Nationally Recognized for Commitment to Sustainability
New York University has won the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education’s (AASHE) annual Campus Sustainability Leadership Award in the four-year and graduate institutions over 15,000 full-time student category. The award recognized NYU as having made the greatest overall commitment to sustainability as demonstrated in its education and research, campus operations, and administration and finance. The award will be presented at the “Greening of the Campus VIII Conference,” Sept. 21 in Indianapolis.
Motown Artist Development Pioneer Maxine Powell
New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study will host Motown artist development pioneer Maxine Powell, in conversation with Gallatin Professor Michael Dinwiddie, on Friday, October 9, 7-9 p.m., at NYU’s Jerry H. NYU Biologist Rockman to Study How Genetic Variation Contributes to Aging
Scientists have long known that genetic variation contributes to differences in aging among individuals, populations, and species. Less clear are the specific genes that drive the aging process. New York University Biologist Matthew Rockman aims to uncover these genes under a $400,000 New Scholar award from the Ellison Medical Foundation.

NYU’s Class of 2008 Gives Back the Green to Manhattan
On Saturday, September 26th, in conjunction with the 400th anniversary of Hudson’s arrival, New York University will unveil the NYU Native Woodland Garden, the Class of 2008’s legacy gift, at Schwartz Plaza, at the corner of Washington Square Park East and West 4th Street, from 1-3pm.
Courant Part of Team to Resolve Ancient Mathematics Problem
Mathematicians from North America, Europe, Australia, and South America have resolved the first one trillion cases of an ancient mathematics problem on congruent numbers. The advance, which included work by David Harvey, an assistant professor at New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, was achieved through a complex technique for multiplying large numbers.
