A Meeting of Minds
by Lewis Aron
NYU faculty
Graduate School of Arts & Science , 1985
nonfiction : 1996
In
this richly nuanced assessment of the various dimensions of mutuality
in psychoanalysis, Aron shows that the relational approach to
psychoanalysis is a powerful guide to issues of technique and
therapeutic strategy. From his reappraisal of the concepts of
interaction and enactment, to his examination of the issue of analyst
self-disclosure, to his concluding remarks on the relational import of
the analyst's ethics and values, Aron squarely accepts the clinical
responsibilities attendant to a postmodern critique of psychoanalytic
foundations.

Ulysses S. Grant on Leadership: Executive Lessons from the Front Lines
by John A. Barnes
College of Arts & Science , 1982
nonfiction : 2001
isbn : 0-7615-2662-5
American
History is replete with rags-to-riches tales, but it is hard to think
of one that compares with that of Ulysses S. Grant. In the spring of
1861, Grant was a modest clerk in his father's leather goods store.
Within three years, he would become commander of all armies of the
United States and go on to win the Civil War. Within eight, he would be
elected president. His remarkable story is truly an inspiration to
leaders from all walks of life.
"Fascinating, Grant's wisdom and courage are finally depicted as a model for the ages."
— Robert Novak, syndicated columnist
In
Ulysses S. Grant on Leadership, John Barnes reveals the leadership
secrets of the man to whom Abraham Lincoln entrusted the very survival
of the Union. You will meet a man of extraordinary personal courage who
overcame failures early in life that would have crushed lesser men. You
will discover how this tenacious general inspired a dispirited army to
achieve victory on the battlefield. Most important, you will learn how
to apply to your own life the characteristics that elevated Grant from
obscurity to greatness.
Ulysses S. Grant was a common man with
uncommon leadership abilities. He succeeded brilliantly where others
had failed. Guided by his magnificent example, so can you.

nonfiction : 2000
isbn : 0-521-59349-2
This
book is concerned with the underlying science and design of laser
materials. It emphasizes the principles of crystal-field engineering
and discusses the basic physical concepts that determine laser gain and
nonlinear frequency conversion in optical crystals. A concise review of
the essential science is presented, including symmetry groups, the
implications of covalencey and the important theories of electronic
structure, energy transfer, radiationless transitions, and the spectra
of laser-active centres in crystals. The predictive capabilities of
crystal-field engineering are developed to show how modification of the
symmetry and composition of optical centres can improve laser
performance. Applications of the principles of crystal-field
engineering to a variety of optical crystals are also discussed in
relation to the performance of laser devices.

The Second Night of the Spirit
by Bhisham Bherwani
GSAS , 2002
nonfiction : 2009
isbn : 978-1-933880-11-2
"These
poems honor the human mystery. They celebrate the oneness of two great
truths: that we are each other, and that we are each alone. They evoke
love and loss, hurt and daily courage. These rare triumphs of spirit
come alive through experience. Here are the dying father, the damaged
child, the distraught and enduring mother, caught in the turn of their
days by the brother who writes his heart out in these beautiful poems.
Passionate feeling and powerful subject fuse their energy. The poet
empowers us by enlarging our understanding." (Marie Ponsot)
"Bherwani
relaunches the personal lyric-epic in this startling first book, a
ferociously fresh account of a brother’s star-crossed life which finds
a commanding mode for the presentation of inner suffering. It also
tells a moving story of loving somebody in spite of the fact that they
are different, and yet because of the fact of their difference. In
Bherwani, we have a poet whose moral sympathy and whose verbal
dexterity proceed from the same gifts: a caring alertness to experience
and an ability to convey his sensitivity through language." (Nicholas
Birns, Professor of Literature, The New School)
"I feel like a
privileged guest in Bherwani's 'anonymous gazebo.' It is a deeply
moving place to be, a real place as well as an internal stage on which
a powerful family drama is played out in originally conceived, highly
personal poems that make universal connections. The slightest taste of
Bherwani's potent concentrate of distilled grief is overpowering."

Today's
religious banalities, political propaganda, and corporate

quantum mechanics, astronomy, biology, and the evolutionary development
of the human brain force new perspectives to comprehend the meaning of
our lives.

A Pilgrim Muddles Through
by Robert F. Brodsky
HeightsEngineering , '50
nonfiction : 2009
isbn : 978-0-615-27216-0
The stories, rants, letters, and essays in ‘A PILGRIM MUDDLES THROUGH’
represent a sometimes serious, as in “Credo of a God-Fearing Atheist,
sometimes ridiculous, as in “The Hard Life Of a Poet”, and sometimes
instructive, as in “Brigs I Have Known”, but always interesting,
glimpse of modern day trials and tribulations. The breadth of the
topics covered is enormous, and all but the serious treatments are
given a light touch by an obvious iconoclast. You can discover how at
last we can have peace in the Middle East how to become an unsuccessful
author and how to get booked on the Goodyear Blimp and, yes, ride a bus
from Haifa to Amman on a Saturday. Also enjoyable and edifying are the
pictures and cartoons that illustrate many of the stories.
ON THE CUTTING EDGE: Tales of a Cold War Engineer at the Dawn of the Nuclear, Guided Missile, Computer and Space Age
by Robert F. Brodsky

nonfiction
: 2007 Distributed by the University of Nebraska Press for Richard
Altschuler & Associates, Inc./ Gordian Knot Books
isbn : I-88409-262-4
"On
the Cutting Edge" presents a series of true stories providing a vivid
account of many of the major programs that have made the last sixty
years an era of remarkable progress in the aerospace arena. Robert F.
Brodsky, an internationally known scientist, engineer, and teacher,
brings a unique perspective to this book, since in each of the
world-changing events discussed, he was a firsthand observer or
professional participant. Written in an accessible style, his account
begins with the start of the computer and atomic ages and progresses
chronologically through the subsequent ages of guided missiles and
space.
Through these narratives, readers learn about the conquest
of the sonic barrier, why the space age started when it did, details of
a space lifeboat Dr. Brodsky designed, how astronautics became a
legitimate academic discipline, the inevitable rise of the hydrogen
economy spurred by fusion, and the great aerospace events of the past
century.
Brodsky is a pioneer in both spacecraft design and the
teaching of astronautics. Until retiring in 1996, he was a professor of
aerospace engineering at USC and previously the Head of the Aerospace
Engineering Department at Iowa State University. He has held executive
engineering positions at Sandia Corporation, Aerojet, Convair, and TRW
Space and Technology was named Outstanding Aerospace Educator and
University Professor of the Year by the American Institute of
Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), where he is a Distinguished
Lecturer for 2007-08 listed in Who’s Who In America, 1963-present and

The Great Expectations School: A Rookie Year in the New Blackboard Jungle
by Dan Brown
TSH , 2003
nonfiction : 2007
isbn : 978-1-55970-835-7
At
twenty-two, Dan Brown came to the Bronx's P.S. 85 as an eager,
fresh-faced teacher. Unbeknownst to him, his assigned class, 4-217, was
the designated "dumping ground" for all fourth-grade problem cases, and
hi students would prove to be more challenging than he could ever
anticipate.
Intent on being a caring, dedicated teacher but
confronted with overwhelming obstacles, Dan felt pushed to the limit
time and again: he found himself screaming with rage, punching his fist
through a blackboard out of sheer frustration, often just wanting to
give up and walk away.
Yet in this seeming chaos, he slowly learned
from his own mistakes and discovered an unexpected well of inspiration
to discipline and teach and make a difference.
The Great
Expectations School is the touching journey of Class 4-217 and their
teacher, Mr. Brown, but more than that, it is the revealing story of a
broken educational system and all those struggling within and fighting
against it.
Showdown At High Noon: Witchhunts, Critics and the End of the Western
by Jeremy Byman
Tisch School of the Arts , 1982
nonfiction : 2004
For more than fifty years, High Noon has been a
touchstone in the popular imagination and a source of endless
controversy about film art. On its release it was hailed as a
masterpiece. But film historians and theorists have also reviled it
almost from the beginning as pretentious "social realism" inspired by
its screenwriter's victimization by the red-hunting House Committee on
Un-American Activities.brShowdown at High Noon is the study of a film
caught between popular admiration and critical disdain. In order to
understand how and why High Noon has elicited such disparate
reactions, author Jeremy Byman explores all of its elements, from its
origins in the mind of blacklisted screenwriter Carl Foreman to its
long-lasting impact on culture, American and otherwise. High Noon not
only affected the westerns that followed it, but also changed
filmmaking in fundamental ways. By analyzing its political, cultural,
and thematic implications, Byman reveals how this one film has had
such a profound and enduring influence, a long lasting impact that
cannot be so easily dismissed.

Popular Sovereignty and the Crisis of German Constitutional Law: The Theory & Practice of Weimar Constitutionalism
by Peter C. Caldwell
Please select from the list below
nonfiction : 1997
isbn : 0822319888
Popular
Sovereignty and the Crisis of German Constitutional Law is a historical
analysis of competing doctrines of constitutional law during the Weimar
Republic. It chronicles the creation of a new constitutional
jurisprudence both adequate to the needs of a modern welfare state and
based on the principle of popular sovereignty. Peter C. Caldwell
explores the legal nature of democracy as debated by Weimar's political
theorists and constitutional lawyers. Laying the groundwork for
questions about constitutional law in today's Federal Republic, this
book draws clear and insightful distinctions between strands of
positivist and anti-positivist legal thought, and examines their
implications for legal and political theory. Caldwell makes accessible
the rich literature in German constitutional thought of the Weimar
period, most of which has been unavailable in English until now. On the
liberal left, Hugo Preuss and Hans Kelsen defended a concept of
democracy that made the constitution sovereign and, in a way, created
the "Volk" through constitutional procedure. On the right, Carl Schmitt
argued for a substantial notion of the "Volk" that could overrule
constitutional procedure in a state of emergency. Rudolf Smend and
Heinrich Triepel located in the constitution a set of inviolable values
of the political community, while Hermann Heller saw in it a guarantee
of substantial social equality. Drawing on the work of these major
players from the 1920s, Caldwell reveals the various facets of the
impassioned constitutional struggles that permeated German legal and
political culture during the Weimar Republic.
Dictatorship, State Planning, and Social Theory in the German Democratic Republic
by Peter C. Caldwell
Please select from the list below
nonfiction : 2003
isbn : 0521820901
The
introduction of state planning and party dictatorship dramatically
altered the environment for social theory in the German Democratic
Republic. But social thought did not disappear. By the mid-1950s, East
German social theorists discovered the basic contradictions of state
socialism that would eventually lead to its collapse: the inability of
the plan to function without markets and its inability to permit
markets the inability of the party-state to guarantee the rule of law
and yet also the need for a regular system of rules in a modern
industrial society and the contradictory philosophical claims of a
Marxist-Leninist philosophy that rejected idealism, and
Marxist-Leninist dogma with its idealistic claim to know the laws of
social modernization. Making use of newly-available archival sources,
Caldwell examines the articulation of these analyses, their subsequent
suppression by party authorities in the late 1950s, and their return
under the guise of cybernetics in the 1960s.

Clocks of New York: An Illustrated History
by Chris DeSantis
GAL , 91
nonfiction : 2006
isbn : 0-7864-2680-2
The
phrase “in a New York minute” is virtually synonymous with all that is
fast-paced and technologically advanced. One of the first cities
founded on the eastern seaboard, New York has been a horological
trendsetter for almost four hundred years. When the first Dutch
settlers came to Manhattan in the early years of the 17th century, they
established America's first stronghold of capitalism. Over the next few
centuries, precise schedules became an inescapable reality of
modernization and precision timepieces became an art form in Europe and
America. As the center of commercial and industrial activity, New York
City developed a particular preoccupation with time, and hence became a
showplace for an astonishing array of timepieces.
From tower clocks
to time balls, this richly illustrated work chronicles the history of
public clocks in New York City. It discusses the premiere clock-makers
of the 19th century such as the Ansonia Clock Company and the Self
Winding Clock Company, the heyday of American public clock making and
the ever-increasing importance of clocks. Post clocks, church clocks,
sundials, and labor timepieces are all discussed herein. Photographs of
subject pieces and an index are included.

Arriving
at an island resort, Scott and Kate make the acquaintance of an older
couple, the Griffins, already tanning on the beach. When Scott agrees
to do the Griffins a favor, he sets in motion a series of encounters
and dilemmas—both between the two couples and within them. Scott
believes it will be an adventure Kate doesn't like the sound of it.
There's something mysterious about the situation. And everyone's
language hides secrets. Relying on the rhythms of poetry, IPalms Are
Not Trees After All/I is a story about exploration and accommodation,
about deciding which stories travel, which to tell. Winner of the 2007

Consuming the Past: The Medieval Revival in Fin-de-siecle France
by Elizabeth Emery and Laura Morowitz
Graduate School of Arts & Science , 97
nonfiction : 2003
isbn : 0 7546 0319 9
From
pilgrimages to popular festivals, from modern spectacles to
advertising, from the work of avant-garde painters to the novels of
Emile Zola, Consuming the Past explores the complexity of the
fin-de-siècle French fascination with the Middle Ages. The authors map
the cultural history of the period from the end of the Franco-Prussian
war to the 1905 separation of Church and State illuminating the
powerful appeal that the medieval past held for a society undergoing
the rapid changes of industrialisation. Challenging the prevailing
notion that this was a mere passing fashion seized upon by the tourist
industry and the manufacturers of cards and bibelots, the authors argue
that popular and scholarly interest evolved together and strongly
influenced the emergence of fresh ideas about French identity, art,
history and religion.

Romancing the Cathedral: Gothic Architecture in Fin-de-Siecle French Culture
by Elizabeth Emery
Graduate School of Arts & Science , 1997
nonfiction : 2001
isbn : 0791451240
Romancing
the Cathedral explores the late-nineteenth-century French passion for
Gothic architecture, particularly the cathedral. Though maligned in the
seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and vandalized during the French
Revolution, by World War I the cathedral was considered "the genius of
the French nation," a privileged and patriotic work of art that
surpassed such other national artworks as Wagner's operas and the
Parthenon. However, the moment at which the Gothic style finally
reached near-universal acclaim in France also coincided with one of the
most anti-clerical periods of French history, the years surrounding the
separation of church and state.
Taking this contradiction as a
starting point, Elizabeth Emery explores how the cathedral's popularity
stemmed from its semantic richness as well as its glorification in the
works of such writers and artists as Emile Zola, J.-K. Huysmans, Marcel
Proust, Paul Claudel, Claude Monet, Auguste Rodin, and others. Using
their works as a springboard, Emery examines the ways in which they
responded and contributed to prevailing discourses about the cathedral.
Interdisciplinary in nature, Romancing the Cathedral will appeal to
those interested in Gothic art and architecture, European cultural
studies, medievalism, and French literature.

The Legacy of Ancient Rome in the Russian Silver Age
by Anna Frajlich
GSAS , 1991
nonfiction : 2007
isbn : 978-90-420-2251-5
The
major aim of this work is to analyze the forms involved in creating the
Roman image and to explore its functionality within the given poetic
system. In addition to formal analysis the background and the stimulus
leading to the writing of a particular poem were explored. Legends and
myths referring to known personalities, or toponims, were examined in
perspective of their original version and other prominent
interpretation.
Another objective of this exegesis was to evaluate
how the images of Rome evolved with the development of Symbolists
poetics. In the process of determining the vertical development of the
Roman theme in the work of every poet the horizontal link to other
recurrent themes within the poetics of the particular poet is
demonstrated.
The Russian Symbolist poets committed to the city
poetry found in Rome a perfect metaphor. In this context the relation
between the Roman and Petersburg texts of the Russian literature is
established. At the same time other notions pertinent to the Roman
theme were exposed, among them the idea of eternal city, of the pax
romana, with a formidable attention paid to the urban myth and the idea
of universalism.

2000 A.D., The Year of the Brain
by George Friedman
Heights College - Engineering , 1942`
fiction : 2000
isbn : 0-595-09110-5
This
is NOT sci-fi it is an allegorical novel which imagines the invention
of the first high-order artificial intelligence. It is not a robot. It
is strictly a subjective thinker. JO - Jefferson One - is the creation
of David Burg and his team at fictional Jefferson College in the near
future.
The author participated in one other great technological
advance - the first atomic bombs - and understood - months before any
public knowledge - that the world was about to change. And in the fifty
years after that we saw all those other technological advances which
radically and rapidly changed our society and our institutions - from
the Xerox machine, the 'pill', the computer, jet aircraft - it's a long
list.
The book is about the people involved, and our institutions
(commercial and governmental) which are profoundly changed by the
presence of Jefferson One - a stationary assembly of electonic gadgetry
who 'sees', 'hears','learns', 'speaks' and is good-humored enough to
disarm 'his' audience.
David Burg has spent his adult life creating
his brainchild in the end he realizes that it is not too late to create
'life' in a more conventional fashion.

The Jerusalem Book of Quotations: A 3,000 Year Perspective

isbn : 978-965-229-392-3
Perhaps
no other city has been spoken of as often or as passionately as
Jerusalem. The Jerusalem Book of Quotations brings together the
kaleidoscopic impressions and perspectives of a representative group of
almost 1,000 of those who have responded to the wonder of the Holy City
from the biblical period to the present: Jews, Christians, and Muslims
pilgrims as well as skeptics, travelers, conquerors, scholars and
statesmen. The work gives expression to the discordant notes of
contrasting perspectives about the meaning of Jerusalem. At the same
time, it reflects the city's unique distinction as the embodiment of
mankind's highest ethical and spiritual aspirations.

The Thinderella Syndrome: A Practical Guide to Individualized Permanent Weight Loss
by Dennis Gage, M.D.
MED , 1976
nonfiction : 2004
isbn : 0533146151
My
book describes my innovative approach to weight maintenance called
“Defensive Eating” whereby individuals are utilizing behavioral
patterns on a maintenance basis. This obviously includes physical
activity patterns, eating style patterns, and nutritional patterns that
are all catered to the life-style for the individual. Patients are
assigned a critical “Red Alert Number” which when reached, warns the
patient that he or she must contact their clinician to re-establish
their defensive eating style patterns. In a single sentence conclusion
of my book, “Doing a diet is not enough, one must live a diet”. Ninety
seven percent of patients who are obese have successfully done a diet
at sometime in their life but less than five percent have kept the
weight off for more than two to three years. Therefore the ultimate
modality for the treatment of obesity must involve individualization of
therapy addressing behavioral patterns, exercise, and life-style
patterns. People must be taught the all-important feature of “defending
their weight off”. My book is used in my Thinderella Lifestyle Change
Program- a "turn-key" weight management program in my NYC office.

Bipolar Kids: Helping Your Child Find Calm in the Mood Storm
by Rosalie Greenberg, M.D.

nonfiction : 2007
isbn : ISBN-10: 0738210803
In
writing a comprehensive guide for parents and guardians of children
with bipolar disorder, Dr. Greenberg addresses one of the most current
issues that is being hotly debated in child psychiatry. Because of the
lack of concrete knowledge about how bipolar disorder manifests itself
in the brains of young people, often being misdiagnosed as ADHD or OCD,
Dr. Greenberg combines illustrative case examples from her 25 years of
practice with the most recent scientific advances and pharmacological
approaches. She emphasizes the importance of paying attention to
bipolar kids, who are often better able to gauge their moods than
adults realize. In addition the book provides information about
unrecognized symptoms, comorbidity, hospitalization, academic options
and real life answers to everyday problems.

Signalers and Receivers: Mechanisms and Evolution of Arthropod Communication
by Michael D Greenfield
HeightsArts , 1973
nonfiction : 2002
isbn : ISBN-10: 0-19-513452-4
In
most terrestrial and aquatic habitats, the vast majority of animals
transmitting and receiving communicative signals are arthropods. This
book presents the story of how this important group of animals use
pheromones, sound, vibration, and light for sexual and social
communication. Because of their small to minute body size most
arthropods have problems sending and receiving acoustic and optical
information, each of which have their own severe constraints. Because
of these restraints they have developed chemical signaling which is not
similarly limited by scale. Presenting the latest theoretical and
experimental findings from studies of signaling, it suggests that close
parallels between arthropods and vertebrates reflect a very limited
number of solutions to problems in behavior that are available within
the confines of physical laws.
'In summary, this is a valuable
addition to the literature on animal communication at the introductory
level. Greenfield's book is worthwile precisely because it is brief. I
will recommend this book for undergraduate courses and for the
generalist reader who wants to know more about this interesting
subject.' - Nature

trials of Lillian Anderson and her family as they scratch their way
down a small-town Minnesota social ladder. Lillian is the dispenser of
practical advice: how to wax pinfeathers off a duck at 3 a.m. how to
have sex in the lake at 14 while maintaining your dignity and how to
survive if your boat sinks. Fierce, wonderfully wry, and yet painfully
earnest, Lillian marches from 8 to 18 - the child of childlike parents,
always figuring out new ways to raise herself - to become a young woman
of fiery determination, untiring humor, and substantial courage.

The Complete Guide for Succcessful Umpiring: How to Survive Little League Baseball and the Soccer Mom
by Ron Hartnett
CAS , 1978
nonfiction : 2009
The
Complete Guide for Successful Umpiring: How to Survive Little League
Baseball and the Soccer Mom is one of a kind. It’s the first book that
helps Rookie Blue (baseball speak for amateur umpire) get game. Having
umpired over a thousand games, author Ron Hartnett puts together a
handy How-to that
s the ump’s job down to calling the strike (plate) and getting the angle (base).
With
The Guide, he offers an intelligent discussion on how amateur umpires
can manage and control the game as well as mechanics needed for
success. Zeroing in on the STRIKE ZONE—that imaginary box over home
plate— Plate Blue must decide, in a split-second, whether the pitch was
a ball or a strike. Because the umpire performs this action two hundred
times per seven-inning contest, it’s not long before plate mechanics
are locked into muscle memory.
Next, Hartnett shows the easy formula
for Field Blue. Starting with HOK (hands on knee) set, Field Blue takes
a few quick steps for the 90, lets the throw take him to the play.
Finally,
given the games that go south, even with an experienced crew, there is
a chapter called “Sportsmanship and Game Control.” Tons of examples on
dealing with meltdown coaches, from other umps and the author’s own
personal experience, round out the book.
At long last, we can put
the Little League/Youth Baseball and Softball umpire where he or she
belongs—at top, instead of the bottom. Respect for Blue is here at last.

BLOOD AND HONEY: A BALKAN WAR JOURNAL
by RON HAVIV Essays by David Rieff, Chuck Sudetic, Bernard Kouchner
College of Arts & Science , 1987
nonfiction : 2000
isbn : 1575001357.
Of
the thousands of images that emerged from the decade of war in former
Yugoslavia, Ron Haviv's stand out as a uniquely profound record. These
award winning photographs depicting both the urgency and tragedy of war
bridge the gap between what the world has commonly witnessed of the war
in the Balkans-soldiers, destroyed cities and refugees-and the stark
but dignified reality of everyday life during the conflict and its
aftermath. Essays by Chuck Sudetic former New York Times correspondent,
David Rieff author of Slaughterhouse: Bosnia and the Failure of the
West and Bernard Kouchner founder of the Nobel Prize-winning
organization Medicines Sans Frontiere and present day UN governor of
Kosovo, offer startling insights into the personal passions and
geo-political tensions underlying the conflict. The images in Blood and
Honey are further augmented by a chronology of the conflict and
quotations from victims, perpetrators, political figures and
international observers that provide alternative and opposing voices
about the war.

Green Squall
by Jay Hopler
CAS , 1992
nonfiction : April 2006
isbn : 0300114532
Announcing the 2005 recipient of the prestigious Yale Younger Poets prize
Jay
Hopler's Green Squall is the winner of the 2005 Yale Series of Younger
Poets competition. As Louise Glück observes in her foreword, “Green
Squall begins and ends in the garden” however, Hopler’s gardens are not
of the seasonal variety evoked by poets of the English lyric—his
gardens flourish at lower, fiercer latitudes and in altogether
different mindscapes. There is a darkness in Hopler’s work as deep and
brutal as any in American poetry. Though his verbal extravagance and
formal invention bring to mind Wallace Stevens’s tropical
extrapolations, there lies beneath Green Squall’s lush tropical
surfaces a terrifying world in which nightmare and celebration are
indistinguishable, and hope is synonymous with despair.
Jay Hopler
was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1970 and has earned degrees from
New York University, The Johns Hopkins University Writing Seminars, and
the Iowa Writers' Workshop. He lives in Southwest Florida.

Seeking the Region in American Literature and Culture: Modernity, Dissidence, Innovation
by Robert Jackson
GSAS , 2001
nonfiction : 2005
isbn : 0-8071-3062-1
Regionalism
often evokes provinciality and an affiliation with minor literary
genres, but Robert Jackson shows that region is an integral part of
American identity, providing grounding for major independent voices.
Jackson offers a new critical model of region that contributes to
literary and cultural study across a wide range of topics. He addresses
American literature since the Civil War with particular attention to
Mark Twain, William Faulkner, Flannery O’Connor, and Toni Morrison. In
advancing their own diverse aesthetic and social agendas—reactionary
and progressive, theological and secular, gender-based, race-based,
and, above all, dissident—these writers, Jackson argues, articulate
some of the most perceptive and innovative expressions of the American
region in the literary history of the United States.

The Selected Papers of Margaret Sanger. Volume 1: The Woman Rebel, 1900-1928
by Esther Katz, ed.
Graduate School of Arts & Science , 1980
nonfiction : 2002
isbn : 025202737X
The birth control crusader, feminist, and reformer Margaret Sanger was
one of the most controversial and compelling figures in the twentieth
century. This first volume of The Selected Papers of Margaret Sanger
documents the critical phases and influences of an American feminist
icon and offers rare glimpses into her working-class childhood,
burgeoning feminism, spiritual and scientific interests, sexual
explorations, and diverse roles as wife, mother, nurse, journalist,
radical socialist, and activist. These letters and other writings,
including diaries, journals, articles, and speeches, most of which have
never before been published, have been selected and assembled with an
eye to telling the story of a remarkable life, punctuated by arrests
and imprisonments, exile, love affairs, and a momentous personal
loss--a life consumed with the quest for women's sexual liberation.
Because its narrative line is so absorbing, Volume 1 may be read as a
powerful biography. Volume 1 covers a twenty-eight-year period from her
nurse's training and early socialist involvement in pre-World War I
bohemian Greenwich Village to her adoption of birth control (a term she
helped coin in 1914) as a fundamental tenet of women's rights. It
traces the intersection of her life and work with other reformers,
activists and leaders of modernity on both sides of the Atlantic,
including Havelock Ellis, H. G. Wells, George Bernard Shaw, Emma
Goldman, Max Eastman, and Eugene Debs, as well as many leading radical
artists and writers of the day. It highlights her legislative and
organizational efforts, her support of the eugenics movement, and the
alliances she secured with medical professionals in her crusade to make
birth control legal, respectable, and accessible. This volume also
includes letters from women desperately in need of fertility control
who saw Sanger as their last hope. Supplemented by an introduction,
brief essays providing narrative and chronological links, and
substantial notes, the volume is an invaluable tool for understanding
Sanger's actions and accomplishments.

Contemporary Native American Architecture: Cultural Regeneration and Creativity

Graduate School of Arts & Science , 1965
nonfiction : 1996
isbn : 019-509739-4 (cloth) 0-19-509740-8 (paper)
Native
Americans have been expressing their modern identity since about 1965
in various ways, including building reservation offices, museums,
health facilities, housing, and even casinos in ways that they and
their architects consider culturally referential. This new artistic
movement reinforces cultural regeneration in other arts, and is often
tied to the creation of group self-esteem useful in treatment of
alcoholism and other problems. The author, an architectural historian
in NYU's Fine Arts Department visited reservations across the country
to conduct interviews and photograph the buildings. The buildings are
presented against a background of anthropological and sociological
research. While scholarly, the book is written in plain English and is
intended for any adult reader with an interest in Native American
issues and in aspects of identity expressed through the arts.

Politics, Religion, and Love

nonfiction : 1991
isbn : 0814750575
This
is the story of three fascinating and strong-willed individuals: H.H.
Asquith, Prime Minister of England his friend and confidant, Edwin
Samuel Montagu, a Jewish member of the Cabinet, and also Secretary of
State for India and the third, the sexually liberated Venetia Stanley,
a brilliant adnd politically sophisticated woman and a member of one of
England's oldest aristocratic families.
This book is also a
recital of racism and anti-semitism in England in the early century -
not merely among the uneducated or the lunatic fringe of the Tory
Party, but amoing the well-educated, the stars of Oxford and Cambridge,
and the leaders of the Liberal Party as well. It demonstrates that even
so educated and affluent a man as Montagu, almost totally assimilated,
who spent a life time trying to escape his Judaism, who married a woman
who had nothing but scorn for all religions - was not immune from the
pain and humiliation of anti-semitism.

Jewish Community of Cuba, 1906-1958
by Jay Levinson
GSAS , 1971, 1974
nonfiction : 2006
isbn : 0-9776207-0-0
In
1906 Manuel Hadida convened a meeting of eleven Jews in his parlor. A
relative of his had passed away. The purpose of the gathering was to
establish a synagogue and Jewish burial ground for the one hundred or
so "Hebrew settlers" in Cuba. At another meeting not long afterwards
officers were elected, but in the Fall 1906 the newly elected treasurer
also died. From this auspicious beginning, the Cuban Jewish community
reached 15,000 or more members at its zenith.
This book traces the
history of that community, reconstructing many events which have been
forgotten. The island's first rabbi made trips to Santiago de Cuba and
Havana from Florida, where he owned an ice cream factory. During World
War II kosher meat was slaughtered in Cuba for soldiers in the U.S.
Army. Meyer Lansky, known for his underworld activities, applied for
membership in a Havana synagogue.
The book also brings new
understanding to more well-known history. The refusal of the Cuban
government to allow the St. Louis to disembark passengers is examined
in light of the flight of Jews from Nazi Europe, particularly to
Mandate Palestine, where British immigration policy was changing
(unknown to the Cubans). The building of new synagogues on the eve of
the Revolution is considered in the context of nouveau riche and the
move to suburbia.

Acid and Basics:
A Guide To Understand Acid-Base Disorders
by Jerome Lowenstein, M.D.
NYU faculty
School of Medicine , 1957
nonfiction : 1993
isbn : 0-19-507572-2
Although
a thorough understanding of acid-base metabolism is crucial for
clinical practice, there are few subjects that seem more difficult or
less accessible to young physicians and medical students. The past ten
years have seen an explosion of knowledge regarding the molecular basis
for membrane transport, now permitting an understanding of the
physiologic basis of acid-base disorders at a level not previously
possible. This informal primer clearly details how transport proteins
facilitate acid secretion and bicarbonate transport across cell
membranes. The author describes how these transport processes provide
the basis for maintenance of cytoplasmic hydrogen ion concentration and
the mechanisms by which the lung and the kidney regulate systemic
acid-base balance. Stimulating and enjoyable, this book should have
wide appeal among medical students and medical house staff seeking a
conceptual framework for understanding acid-base disorders.

In
this book, an accomplished physician and teacher of medicine discusses
the importance of being a "caring" doctor, especially now that the
focus of medicine is increasingly on technological innovation and
health care costs. With wisdom and compassion, Dr. Jerome Lowenstein
tells stories about relationships between medical students and their
teachers, physicians and their colleagues, and physicians and their
patients. He reflects on what doctors learn from treating chronic
illness how they respond to patients' needs for reassurance how they
bear the burden of treating patients with life-threatening or
degenerative disease whether the distinction between traditional and
"alternative" medical treatment is ultimately beneficial or destructive
and many other issues. Dr. Lowenstein's ruminations on humanistic
aprroaches to learning and practicine medicine will be treasured by
physicians, medical students, and patients alike.

Take
a look back at New York circa 1971. Growing up and learning about
baseball, Yankee tradition, and seeing the big ballpark in the Bronx
for the first time. What could be better?
Yes, indeed, for a
nine-year old boy, what could be better than his first trip to the
Stadium with his father? It was Sunday, June 6, 1971—and Bat Day. After
a disrupted subway trip and a cab ride, tickets were purchased, he was
through the turnstile, and then he was given a Louisville Slugger with
the name of his favorite ballplayer, Bobby Murcer. Again, what could be
better?
See that day through the eyes of the nine-year old boy.
The Sunday morning ritual of Mass at his parish church followed by the
anticipation and preparation for that first trip to the House That Ruth
Built. Then a walk up Avenue A and across Houston Street to the Second
Avenue subway stop. Seeing that magical baseball palace. Receiving a
souvenir bat. Stan Bahnsen is on the mound and the Yankees are on the
way to a victory over the Kansas City Royals. A time with his father to
be cherished.
First, Fourth and Last was written for all who can
identify with those special childhood days. It is also for those who
want to learn about how the NYC of the early 1970s, as well as sport
teams and players that seemed larger than life, created memories for a
lifetime.
The book focuses on that first game in a season that saw
the Yankees finish in fourth place. It was also the last season before
baseball’s labor and management acrimony was to become a source of
ongoing anxiety for those who loved the game.

The Chinatown Death Cloud Peril

From the publisher:
An
astounding literary debut that brings a beloved genre of the past
roaring into the Twenty-First Century. "The Chinatown Death Cloud
Peril" casts the rivalry between two of pulp fiction's most legendary
writers into its own amazing saga which bursts from the pages with
blood, cruelty, fear, mystery, vengeance, courageous heroes, evil
villains, dames in distress, secret identities and disguises, global
schemes, hideous deaths, beautiful broads, deadly superweapons,
cliffhanging escapes, and other outrageous pulp lies that just might be
completely true.
The "Chinatown Death Cloud Peril" is a
swashbuckling, breathtaking romantic epic of magic and love, marriage
and fatherhood, ambition and loss, and writers who never forget their
deadlines even when facing the end of the world. In its pages is a tale
that deftly weaves the lives of its real-life characters into a lie of
outrageous proportions that just may tell the truth, but is always
thrillingly, unapologetically pulp.
Worlds of Talk: The Presentation of Self in Everyday Conversation
by Martin J. Malone
College of Arts & Science , 1972
nonfiction : 1997
isbn : 0-7456-1897-9
Worlds
of Talk examines how we present our selves in everyday talk and
interaction. Selves and conversations are skillful accomplishments
requiring trust, dependency, and coordination. They are produced by
multiple partners cooperating in the production of social events. The
self is a "performed character" - a "dramatic effect" in Goffman's
terms - which results from shaping our behavior to create a desired
impression. Talk is both the means and the product of such events.
Selves live in the worlds that talk creates.
Using the methods of
conversation analysis, this book seeks to discover how selves are
created and transformed in everyday talk. It examines how pronouns are
used to create interactional boundaries, the strategic manipulation of
interactional support, talk in dealing with conflict, and stylistic
differences associated with gender. Theoretical discussion is combined
with fine-grained analysis of ordinary conversation.

Understanding Terrorism and Managing Its Consequences
by Paul M. Maniscalco and Hank T. Christen
Wagner Graduate School of Public Service , 99
nonfiction : 2001
isbn : 0130212296
This
book is an important and insightful contribution to America’s on-going
national domestic preparedness effort. It is a highly pragmatic volume
designed for first responders and other operational public servants who
may one day be called upon to respond to a terrorist incident in the
line of duty. This makes the book especially valuable, since this
community of operators has only recently been drawn into America’s
counterterrorism program. The first responders’ contribution to
domestic preparedness, however, in increasingly understood and
appreciated.
Paul Maniscalco and Hank Christen are uniquely
positioned to write this book. Through their current and past public
service, they have experience in the classroom, in the policymaking
arena, and on the street. Their book bridges the gap between these
disciplines. Both men have been at the forefront not only of educating
first responders about the terrorism threat and the operational
requirements of effective consequence management operations, but of
educating policy-makers and experts on the capabilities and needs of
the first responders. Their new book represents one of the first books
on terrorism response written by people who have real field experience
in emergency management. As such, policy experts on terrorism and
counterterrorism can learn much from this book, and emergency response
personnel and other first responders will find it invaluable as a
primer on the myriad issues associated with the consequence management
of terrorist incidents.

"American
policing has been preparing to effectively deal with terrorism and
weapons of mass effect for a very long time. But in the post September
11th world, our educational and training efforts must be significantly
enhanced. This field guide has emerged as the best educational tool on
the market. Every police officer should leave with a copy in their duty
bag for a quick on-scene reference."
Dr. James O'Keefe, St. John's University, Retired Director of Training, NYPD
"
A succinct, well organized first responder guide for our thin blue
line. It is practical information in an easy to read and understandable
format. I would rate it a "must have" for every officer."
D.C. Jim Dozier, J.D., Ph.D., Executive Director Texas Commission on Law Enforcement and President IADLEST
"Maniscalco
and Christen have scored again with a comprehensive guidebook that no
field officer or commander should be without. Drawing on their
extensive experience and expertise in planning for and actually
managing some of the worst terrorist incidents, the authors provide an
indispensable tool to deal with them."
Peter S. Beering, Terrorism Preparedness Coordinator , City of Indianapolis
"Terrorists
have years to plan their acts of violence, whereas, law enforcement has
only minutes to respond and seconds to make the right decisions. The
Terrorism Response: Field Guide for Law Enforcement provides a
logically displayed, quick reference for taking the correct responsive
action. I highly recommend that every law enforcement officer carry one
on duty."
Steven T. Kernes, Director, Pacific Northwest Law Enforcement Training Center
"
In the demanding and changing world of public safety this field guide
is a must read for all public safety officers. It goes beyond the
response to terror and addresses on the scene crises management

Pisano, creator of the first set of bronze doors for the Baptistry of

and solutions. Two major currents in the European area--late
manifestations of the Parisian court style and a classicizing movement
within French Gothic art--are reflected in the work of Andrea and Nino

This begs the question, how much has man's creation of

Situation D is the advent of devastatingly incurable sexually

The Futurist: A Novel

Yates
is a Futurist. Which is to say, he makes a very good living flying
around the world dispensing premonitory wisdom, a.k.a. pre-packaged
B.S., to world governments, corporations, and global leadership
conferences. He is an optimist by trade and a cynic by choice. He’s the
kind of man who can give a lecture on successive days to a leading
pesticide manufacturer and the Organic Farmers of America, and receive
standing ovations at both.
But just as the American Empire is beginning to fray around the edges, so too is Yates’ carefully scripted existence.
Thus
begins an absolutely original novel that is driven by equal parts
corrosively funny satire, genuine physical fear, and heartfelt moral
anguish. From the hideously ugly Greenlander nymphomaniacal artist to
the gay male-model spy to the British corporate magnate with a taste
for South Pacific virgin sacrifice rituals, The Futurist manages to be
wildly entertaining and deadly serious at the same time.
Wry,
picaresque, and a wicked barb aimed at all that is fatuous, The
Futurist is the story of a pundit who finds his audience when he
proclaims he knows nothing.

Writing Pancho Villa's Revolution. Rebels in the Literary Imagination of Mexico
by Max Parra
GSAS , 1982
nonfiction : 2005
isbn : 0-292-70697-9
The
1910 Mexican Revolution saw Francisco "Pancho" Villa grow from social
bandit to famed revolutionary leader. Although his rise to national
prominence was short-lived, he and his followers (the villistas)
inspired deep feelings of pride and power amongst the rural poor. After
the Revolution (and Villa's ultimate defeat and death), the new ruling
elite, resentful of his enormous popularity, marginalized and
discounted him and his followers as uncivilized savages. Hence, it was
in the realm of culture rather than politics that his true legacy would
be debated and shaped.
Mexican literature following the Revolution
created an enduring image of Villa and his followers. This book focuses
on novels, chronicles, and testimonials written from 1925 to 1940 that
narrated Villa's grassroots insurgency and celebrated—or condemned—his
charismatic leadership. By focusing on canonical works by Mariano
Azuela and Martín Luis Guzmán, as well as works closer to the violent
tradition of northern Mexican frontier life by Nellie Campobello, Celia
Herrera, and Rafael F. Muñoz, this book examines the alternative views
of the revolution and of the villistas. Max Parra studies how these
narratives articulate different and at times competing views about
class and the cultural "otherness" of the rebellious masses. This
unique revisionist study of the villista novel also offers a deeper
look into the process of how a nation's collective identity is formed.

Dare To Question
by Jack Perrine
Graduate School of Arts & Science , 1064
nonfiction : 2004
isbn : 0976292424
Starting
with Paul, the religion now referred to as Pauline Christianity has
been an endless compilation of divine pronouncements and unproven
miracles. Excessive attention to myths, miracles and hidden meanings
have detracted Christians from their initial responsibility, making the
world a better place. Vast amounts of time and effort are wasted in
searching for esoteric scriptural messages and in the debating of inane
subjects.
The increasing control of Christian concepts by the
absolutists has resulted in a mind-numbing insistence on the literal
interpretation of scripture as opposed to the spirit of the message.
Dare
To Question takes issue with such misuses of Christian ideologies.
Failure to question Christian concepts that appear to defy reason is a
major factor in preventing Christianity from reaching its full
potential.
Dare To Question is a composition of over one hundred
topics that are designed specifically for those Christians who are
tired of being told by their church leaders that they must never
question any religious concept.
The topics are designed to
motivate Christians to view their religion objectively and to question
any concepts or claims that defy reason or appear the product of error
or misinterpretation.

Aglow in the Dark
by Vincent Pieribone and David F. Gruber
CAS , 86
nonfiction : 2006
isbn : 0674019210
From Harvard University Press:
In
the early 1960s, in a small shack on the Washington coast, a young,
self-educated Japanese scientist performed an experiment to determine
what made a certain jellyfish glow. The substance he discovered, green
fluorescent protein, would revolutionize molecular biology,
transforming our study of everything from the AIDS virus to the
workings of the brain. Aglow in the Dark follows the path that took
this glowing compound from its inauspicious arrival on the scientific
scene to its present-day eminence as one of the most ground
ing discoveries of the twentieth century.
The
story unfolds in far-flung places, from the coral reefs of the Pacific
Ocean, to the medical schools and marine stations of our leading
universities, to a cold war-era research laboratory in Moscow.
Traversing the globe and the decades, Aglow in the Dark conveys the
human fascination with bioluminescence, or "living light," its
little-known application in war, forensic science, and molecular
biology, and how it led to the finding of green fluorescent protein.
The book reveals a hidden world where light is manipulated by animals
and humans and put to remarkable uses--unlocking the secrets of the
human brain, conquering dreaded diseases, and perhaps someday linking
minds and machines. The authors deftly lead the reader through a
complex story at the interface of biology and physics--and into the
realm of wonder on the frontiers of scientific endeavor.

Technomanifestos. In just fifty years, the information revolution has
swept across the world. Computers have become faster, lighter, and

cybernetics to the Internet, we are in the grips of a knowledge revolution. It has already reshaped education,
business, politics, and culture. Technomanifestos is the story of the information revolution as imagined in the
writings
of Vannevar Bush, Alan Turing, Norbert Wiener, Doug Englebart, Seymour
Papert, Richard Stallman,Nelson, and Jaron Lanier. These visionaries
are all "techno-humanitarians"—engineers, programmers,computer
scientists, and activists dealing with the intersection of technology

times. Each feels that the world of information isn't for the benefit
of those who get there first or have the most money. They see a future

Stepping Out of the Brain Drain: Applying Catholic Social Thought in a New Era of Migration
by Michele Pistone and John Hoeffner
STERN , 1986
nonfiction : 2007
isbn : 0-7391-1505-7
Stepping
Out of the Brain Drain represents an important and unique contribution
to the intensifying debate about highly-skilled migration from
developing to developed countries. Addressing the issue from the
perspective of Catholic social thought, the authors conclude that
official Catholic social teaching’s traditional opposition to “brain
drain” migration from developing to developed countries is due for a
reassessment. Stepping Out of the Brain Drain provides exactly this, as
it demonstrates that both the economic and the ethical rationales for
the teaching’s opposition to “brain drain” have been undermined in
recent years, and shows how the adoption of a less critical policy
could provide enhanced opportunities for poor countries to accelerate
their economic development.
“This splendid book provides an
insightful, dispassionate, informed and comprehensive analysis of the
phenomenon of ‘brain drain’ by two prominent scholars with both a
social conscience and a cool head. Every policymaker and scholar
interested in this important phenomenon, and in its policy
implications, must be required to read it.”
Jagdish Bhagwati, University Professor, Economics and Law, Columbia University
“An
original, bracing, and controversial re-thinking of the 'brain drain.'
A good test for those who think they know everything about immigration."
Michael Novak, George Frederick Jewett Scholar in Religion, Philosophy, and Public Policy at the American Enterprise Institute
“This is a ground-
ing
book, and should be read by everybody who cares about the interplay
between migration and development. Pistone and Hoeffner detail the
contributions that skilled workers make to economic development and
poverty reduction in their nations of origin. In an era characterized
by globalization, they see the mobility of skilled migrants as a ‘gain’
for both sending and receiving nations, a gain that very directly
addresses the root causes of migration.”
Donald Kerwin, Executive Director, Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc.
“This
impressively researched and compassionate book makes the case that
today’s migrants can often do more to fulfill their obligations to help
their families and home communities as migrants—through remittances,
investment, and know-how—than if they remained at home. It raises
important questions not only for Catholics, but for anyone who is
concerned about the ethical implications of migration policies.”
Kathleen Newland, Director, Migration Policy Institute
“This
book represents a challenge to the teaching Church from two Catholic
scholars whose faith convictions run deep and whose knowledge of
Catholic Social Teaching is impressive.”

violent prizefighter with the looks and build of Will Smith who has
made many enemies due to his arrogance and temper.
When his
girlfriend's severed torso is found on a meat hook in the old
meatpacking district, all fingers point to Brice. While seated in his
limousine on Sixth Avenue all the phones ring at once and a calm
anonymous caller tells him to "Get out of the car and run. The police
want to arrest you for murdering Olga." As the sirens near, Brice bolts
down the subway and his life of wealth and celebrity privilege spirals
out of control. He is instructed to hide out in Chinatown with a con
man named Chili who he does not trust. Over the next few days, he will
fight for his life and suffer enormous physical pain as he enlists the
help of an old friend Willy, an expert in Jeet Kune Do and a graduate
of the Los Angeles gang academy. Together, they must rescue his
kidnapped brother, elude the Russian mob and find a way to fulfill the
agreement with his employer (The Sony Corporation) to fight a no-holds
bout in Cuba.

In
this hip and utterly indispensable guide, two happily married husbands
and regular guys reveal the secrets to getting a man down on bended
knee -- his most uncomfortable position.
Over the years, Richard
Kirshenbaum and Daniel Rosenberg have dispensed loads of successful
relationship advice to friends, colleagues, and relatives, who then
pushed the ex-bachelors to share their lessons with the masses of
future brides who need help taking their existing relationships to the
next level. These guys have been there and know what it takes to get
even the biggest commitment phobes to take the plunge.
Closing the
Deal will help you make a realistic assessment of your relationship and

new way to drive your relationship toward marriage without resorting to
game playing.
The authors promote the importance of truth telling,

your man. You don't have to be the prettiest, thinnest, or richest
woman to close the deal -- there is an art to it
Closing the Deal is
not about outsmarting your man to the altar -- it's about learning to
understand him. Richard and Daniel explain that no matter how much a
guy may love his significant other, Change is the Enemy, so wannabe
brides everywhere must convince their boyfriends that marriage is man's
best friend. Closing the Deal will show you how to do just that.
To
help future brides build their matrimonial muscles and monitor their
progress, Richard and Daniel include quizzes and real-life scenarios

Taming Your Inner & Outer Bullies: Confronting Life's Stressors And Winning
by Steven B. Rosenstein, LCSW, MS
SSW , 1976
nonfiction : New Horizon Press April 2006
isbn : 13:978-0-88282-274-7
This psychology/personal improvement book offers dramatic new insights
into human psychology, relationships, and cultures, where
victimizations are the rule and not the exception. The work is based
upon the most accurate wisdom by the sages of psychology, anthropology,
sociology, literature, and zoology.
This book explains how the
parent/child relationship actually affects the developing psyche of a
predator species. There are consequences to victimizing a predator
child and those consequences can result in serious unhappiness for them
as well as society. Illustrations and case studies of the famous and
infamous are presented.
When personality theorists created a
psychology of mental disorders, by definition, they implied there were
people on the planet with perfectly happy lives, no emotional problems,
wonderful marriages, and fabulous self-esteems, which is obviously
nonsensical. The truth is all of us live with varying degrees of
emotional and interpersonal conflict and it is absurd to deem everyone
as nuts
Although unhappiness is the focal point of the work,
demystifying human nature and relationships are its foundation. The
chapters move along a continuum, showing the consistency between the
bully-victim dyad in the human mind and its expression in all
relationships, as well as societal institutions. It was precisely for
this reason that the three areas had to be integrated together.
The book is a crystal ball that helps each individual reader understand
the unique nature of their present problems, while predicting and
hopefully preventing further unhappiness long before a life is in
needless in ruins.
The Dream of the Perfect Child
by Joan Rothschild
Graduate School of Arts & Science , 1970, 1966
nonfiction : 2005
isbn : 0-253-21760-1
The Dream of the Perfect Child is a historic and cultural journey from
the “Perfectibility of Man” in the 18th century to the “perfect child”
today. As science, medicine, technology, and cultural beliefs
intersected at specific historic moments, Condorcet’s egalitarian
vision gave way to the elitist, selective goals of the positivists,
Social Darwinists, and eugenicists, who, pursuing the “perfect race,”
misapplied science to reproductive practices to label and eliminate the
imperfect. Although subsequently discredited, negative eugenics
reemerged at mid-20th century as the unlocking of the genetic code
combined with prenatal diagnosis technologies to produce tools for
negative genetics to enter reproductive medical practice, and for the
discourse of the perfect child to emerge. As individual decisions in
the doctor’s office add up to rejecting the imperfect child with birth
defects as unacceptable, and certifying the accepted, wanted child as
near to perfect, medical practice conflates healthy and perfect,
distorting parents’ hopes and fears. The nightmare of the “defective”
child haunts and fuels the decisions, reinforcing centuries-old
negative attitudes toward people with disabilities. Among critiques of
the discourse of the perfect child, the least effective are those of
bioethicists who fail to raise significant issues and support the
status quo. More effective are counter-voices closer to reproductive
practice: medical professionals, pregnant women, disability advocates,
and feminists, who suggest frameworks for alternative discourses. The
aim is not to reject technology, but to enlist it to transform the
dream: for every child to be born healthy and wanted, accepted in all
its uniqueness and diversity.

The Guide to Pastoral Counseling and Care
Edited by
Gary Ahlskog, S.T.M., Ph.D.
and Harry Sands, Ph.D.
"A
wealth of practical information is to be found in this essential
resource for congregational clergy, seminarians and teachers, pastoral
counselors, therapists, chaplains, and supervisors. Between the
Introduction by Orlo Strunk, Jr. and the Epilogue by Ann B. Ulanov,
this hands-on guide covers a spectrum of topics facing pastors on the
front lines in our intense and often difficult society. In addition to
needing the skills to recognize mental illness among congregants,
clergy are called upon in situations of abuse, physical illness,
threats of suicide, marital discord, problems in child rearing, group
conflicts, and more. As community leaders struggling with health care
delivery, the prison system, or the debilitating effects of prejudice,
pastors must inevitably expand their own insights into theory and
practice, science and religion, spirituality and healing. [All of these issues and more are presented with practical guidelines for a skillful approach to pastoral ministry.] This much needed resource can be read
cover-to-cover or thumbed as a reference in difficult situations."

Schaeffer, a nationally renowned options expert, offers his own
carefully tested, prudent and profitable strategies for trading
options. He begins by revealing how options can be used as an
inexpensive, leveraged vehicle for profiting from the movement in an
equity. With clarity and logic he explains the basic principles of
options trading, emphasizing why options cannot be traded like stocks -
a very common and potentially very costly mistake. Schaeffer delves
into the psychology of options trading, demonstrating how to
distinguish between "high" and "low" expectation stocks, how to measure
sentiment and how to master the valued Contrary Opinion theory for
successful trading. In a detailed section on applications, Schaeffer
gives you practical, hands-on advice on how to use a full array of

This
book develops a critique of utopianism through a provocative comparison
of the works of Marx and Hayek, thus engaging two vastly different
traditions in critical dialogue. By emphasizing the methodological and
substantive similarities between Marxian and Hayekian perspectives, it
challenges each tradition's most precious assumptions about the other.
Through this comparative analysis, the book articulates the crucial
distinctions between utopian and radical theorizing.

Ayn Rand: The Russian Radical

Graduate School of Arts & Science , 1988
nonfiction : 1995
isbn : 0-271-01831-3
This
book provides the first comprehensive analysis of the intellectual
roots and philosophy of Ayn Rand, one of the most widely read and
controversial philosophers of the twentieth century. It views
"Objectivism" as a rejection--and affirmation--of key elements in the
Russian tradition. It argues that Rand absorbed a dialectical method of
inquiry from her Russian teachers that profoundly influenced her
literary and philosophic project. Together with MARX, HAYEK, AND UTOPIA
and TOTAL FREEDOM, it is part of a trilogy of works by Sciabarra that
aims for a "dialectical libertarianism."

Total Freedom:
Toward a Dialectical Libertarianism
by Chris Matthew Sciabarra
NYU faculty
Graduate School of Arts & Science , 1988
nonfiction : 2000
isbn : 0-271-02049-0
Building
upon MARX, HAYEK, AND UTOPIA and AYN RAND: THE RUSSIAN RADICAL, this
book completes what LINGUA FRANCA has called Sciabarra's "epic
scholarly quest" to reclaim dialectics, usually associated with the
Marxian left, as a methodology that can revivify libertarian thought.
Part One of the book surveys the history of dialectics from the ancient
Greeks through the Austrian school of economics. Part Two investigates
in detail the work of Murray Rothbard as a leading modern libertarian,
in whose thought Sciabarra finds both dialectical and nondialectical
elements. Ultimately, Sciabarra aims for a dialectical-libertarian
synthesis, highlighting the need (not sufficiently recognized in
liberalism) to think of the "totality" of interconnections in a dynamic
system as the way to ensure human freedom while avoiding
"totalitarianism" (such as resulted from Marxism). More information on
the author's trilogy can be found at:

Feminist Interpretations of Ayn Rand
by Mimi Reisel Gladstein and Chris Matthew Sciabarra, eds.
NYU faculty
Graduate School of Arts & Science , 1988
nonfiction : 1999
isbn : 0-271-01831-3
This
landmark anthology is the first to engage critically the writings of
Ayn Rand from feminist perspectives. The interdisiplinary feminist
strategies of re-reading Rand range from the lightness of camp to the
darkness of de Sade, from postandrogyny to post-structuralism. A highly
charged dialogue on Rand's legacy provides the forum for a
reexamination of feminism and its relationship to egoism,
individualism, and capitalism. Rand's place in contemporary feminism is
assessed through comparisons with other twentieth-century feminists,
such as Beauvoir, Wolf, Paglia, Eisler, and Gilligan. What results is
as provocative in its implications for Rand's system as it is for
feminism. Contributors include: Barbara Branden, Nathaniel Branden,
Diana Brickell, Susan Love Brown, Susan Brownmiller, Thomas Gramstad,
Melissa Jane Hardie, Barbara Grizzuti Harrison, Valerie Loiret-Prunet,

Making Sense of Social Security Reform
by Daniel Shaviro
NYU faculty
School of Law
nonfiction : 2000
isbn : 0-226-75116-3
Plans
to reform Social Security are as plentiful, and to most people about as
welcome, as Christmas fruitcakes. But public political discussion of
Social Security reform has emphasized bland and close to meaningless
abstraction. This book provides a clear picture of the issues posed by
Social Security reform. To explain such abstractions as "the Social
Security system" and "privatization," it
s them down into their salient parts, and conceptually integrates them with the surrounding fiscal and economic landscape.
Thus,
Social Security is essentially a 3-part program that (1) mandates
forced saving by participants, (2) limits their portfolio choice, and
(3) transfers lifetime wealth in various ways, such as from
high-earners to low-earners and from single or two-earner households to
one-earner married households. Privatization is essentially an
arbitrarily assembled compilation of the following three conceptually
distinct policy changes: (1) increase the system’s advance funding in
the hope that this will correlate with increasing national saving (2)
increase participants' portfolio choice within Social Security system,
and (3)
eliminate redistribution through Social Security, whether
between generations or from high-earners to low-earners within a
generation. Different people may favor none,
some, or all of these distinct changes to the current system.
While
the book closes with a brief sketch of a proposal that might be called
progressive privatization, its main aim is to permit discussion of
Social Security reform in terms of its fundamental allocative and
distributional effects rather than in terms of mere symbolism or
bookkeeping conventions.

What Children Learn From Their Parents' Marriage
by Judith P. Siegel, Ph.D.
NYU faculty
Ehrenkranz School of Social Work
nonfiction : 00
isbn : 0-06-019188-0
In
a provocative new look at family dynamics, J. Siegel asserts that the
key to the child's healthy development is not simply the relationship
he has with each parent, but the perception he has of the relationship
between the parents. It may be your marriage, says Siegel, but it is
your child's blueprint for the intimate relationships he will form as
an adult. This book combines Siegel's clinical work with the latest
research on families and child development. Siegel identifies the key
elements of marriage that provide critical information to children, and
offers useful advide, illuminating examples, and insight for parents
intent on building the solid foundation that all children need for a
happy, emotionally secure future. This book will be of interest to
therapists as well as parents, and has significant ramifications for
divorcing couples as well as intact families.

Mean Martin Manning
by Scott Stein
GSAS , 1995
fiction : 2007
Martin
Manning hasn’t left his apartment or had contact with another human
being in thirty years. He’s happy eating his sandwiches, wearing his
bathrobe, and watching TV. Martin is going to go on like this forever,
alone, the proverbial immovable object.
Along comes Caseworker Alice
Pitney, knocking on doors without apology. She’s an irresistible force
starting a self-improvement program in Martin’s building, and won’t
take no for an answer. If it takes a trial of absurd proportions and a
ludicrous treatment program to make Martin into the man he could be and
should have been, that’s just fine with Pitney.
Can Martin Manning
stand up to Pitney, her thugs, Judge Sarnauer, and a host of others
hell-bent on telling him what to do? He can. But to win this epic
battle of wills, he’ll need to call on a lifetime of stubbornness and
downright meanness, a patience rarely seen, and more than a little luck.
Mean
Martin Manning sets its satirical sights on all manner of defenseless
prey, including nanny state busybodies, sensitivity training, dog
lovers, television talk shows, haircut licenses, aggressive doctors,
political correctness, bloviating academics, demanding judges, and
little tyrants everywhere. But not all is cynicism and bile. There’s
also ample adoration for the joyous wonders of linoleum, preservatives,
cold cuts, mayonnaise, frog figurines, bowel regularity, freedom, and
sweet, sweet justice.

especially those related to children and teens, is easier than looking
closely at the complex economic, social and political issues that shape
young peoples' lives today.
Digging into the historical and
societal trends over the past century and drawing from the most current
social science research, this book argues that fears of social change
explain our desire to blame media for creating social problems.
Kids These Days: Facts and Fictions About Today's Youth
by Karen Sternheimer
TSH , 1990
nonfiction : 2006
isbn : 0742546675
Kids
These Days critically examines the hottest news stories of the past few
years to assess whether the news for kids is really as bad as it
sounds. Is kidnapping by strangers really a threat now than in the
past? Are disputes at school now settled with guns instead of fists?
And are kids, especially girls, bigger bullies than ever before?
This
book explores overall trends and statistics to compare the hype to
reality. The truth is that kids today do face unique obstacles and
challenges, but their situation isn't nearly as dire as many news
accounts would have us believe.
Mastering Computers, for the Beginner, User and Trouble-Shooter
by Marvin Stiglitz, PE.
Heights College - Engineering , 1968
nonfiction : 2000
isbn : 0-9671571-1-0
Mastering
Computers, for the Beginner, User and Trouble-Shooter, was designed to
enable a new computer user the ability to understand, use, upgrade and
trouble-shoot software and hardware, for newer and older computers. In
addition, it will explain graphics and other types of files used, as
well as explain phone communication with or without the Internet. It
will also explain several methods of communication between computers
without using a phone (in the same room), including protocols and LAN.
Also, types of high speed Internet communication and their associated
terms, such as DSL, ADSL, ISDN, megahertz and bandwidth are explained.
Although I gave this book my best understanding as an electrical engineer, it was edited for the layman.
One
computer school owner informed me the book gives a good background for
the Microsoft A+ and System’s Engineer Certifications, as well as Unix.
He wants all of his students to read it. Readers have told me they find
it extremely informative and easily understandable. Understand, use
effectively, upgrade, troubleshoot hardware and software. Plus a Quick
start to Word and Excel , communications, file types, multimedia and graphics. Also see www.computer-selfhelp.com.

THE WILD TRUMPET CALL
by JULES TRAGARZ
CAS , 1950
fiction : 2006
isbn : 1-58982-238-2
The
writer allows the reader an insightful look into the minds of the
story’s protagonists, whose aimless idealism and war-weary skepticism
sum up the experience of a generation. He depicts how some World War II
veterans attempt to shape their own destiny during their final months
at New York University by applying what they have learned from their
wartime experiences, as well as from their studies. The direction each
of them eventually takes is revealed in a series of interlocking
narratives, told with insight, humor and dramatic impact that demands
that the reader employ intellect, as well as their emotions, to the
thoughts and actions that come to life on its pages. The events that
take place in this story are moving, dynamic, and show how even the
most noble of hopes and wishes born out of harrowing events in the past
can be thwarted by tragedy and fate in the present. Sweeping,
provocative, and compassionate, The Wild Trumpet Call reveals how the
experience of war transformed the youthful ambitions that raised the
spirit and values of American society in ways that resulted in their
being referred to by Tom Brokaw as “The Greatest Generation.”

The Bernhardt Hamlet: Culture and Context
by Gerda Taranow
, 1952
nonfiction : 1997
isbn : 0-8204-2335-1
Critics
regarded Bernhardt's interpretation of HAMLET as the revelation of
Shakespeare's tragedy in France. THE BERNHARDT HAMLET is the first to
investigate the production and to explain its context and its impact
upon the cultural life of the time. Bernhardt's most significant
innovation was her rejection of romantic sensibility in favor of the
revenge tradition. In assuming a male role, she remained within the
tradition of "travesti" that dominated the 19th century. Classically
trained, the 54-year old Bernhardt refashioned the HAMLET inheritance
with insight, vigor, and originality.

The Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East
by Sandy Tolan
select
nonfiction : May 2006
isbn : 1582343438
From Publishers Weekly
Starred
Review. The title of this moving, well-crafted book refers to a tree in
the backyard of a home in Ramla, Israel. The home is currently owned by
Dalia, a Jewish woman whose family of Holocaust survivors emigrated
from Bulgaria. But before Israel gained its independence in 1948, the
house was owned by the Palestinian family of Bashir, who meets Dalia
when he returns to see his family home after the Six-Day War of 1967.
Journalist Tolan (Me & Hank) traces the history of the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the parallel personal histories of
Dalia and Bashir and their families—all refugees seeking a home. As
Tolan takes the story forward, Dalia struggles with her Israeli
identity, and Bashir struggles with decades in Israeli prisons for
suspected terrorist activities. Those looking for even a symbolic
magical solution to that conflict won't find it here: the lemon tree
dies in 1998, just as the Israeli-Palestinian peace process stagnates.
But as they follow Dalia and Bashir's difficult friendship, readers
will experience one of the world's most stubborn conflicts firsthand.

The Final Ethic
by Jules Tragarz
CAS , 1950
nonfiction :
Paul
Bourveau, a budding Jesuit scholar, undergoes an epiphany during World
War II that leaves him convinced that some divine force has assigned
him the task of rectifying past wrongs meted out to others by past
actions of the Vatican. Although unaware of how to accomplish this end,
his post-war search for its validity sets him on an adventure-filled
journey beset by many moral conflicts. He responds to them with his own
instincts, as well as his inner sense of right and wrong, rather than
by the strict adherence to the Church's teachings, especially when
forced to commit the cardinal sin of murder. The voyage ends in
Jerusalem. From his experiences in that holy city, he settles on how
best to fulfill such a holy mission. In doing so, however, secular and
religious forces seemingly become indistinguishable from one another
making him question whether divine will, or chance, had thrust him into
becoming a participant in founding the state of Israel, as well as a
trusted adviser to Pope John Paul II. Like other great characters of
fiction, this is a saga of. one man's struggle to make moral choices
when faced with problems of the heart that seem insoluble.

models and strategies for better understanding this important
phenomenon. In the words of the authors, "The framework (presented

how much it might be worth, and the relative merits of formulating and

Law Enforcement and the INS:
A Participant Observation Study of Control Agents
by George Weissinger
Graduate School of Arts & Science , 1982
nonfiction : 1996
isbn : 0761802878
I
wrote this book in an effort to describe the actual enforcement
operations of the INS inside the United States. I continue to research
the topic and hope to update the material with special emphasis on
criminal aliens in the United States. Interestingly, nothing much has
changed since I did my original research. The government and the public
rely on media reports about Mexican border crossers. There is little
attention to the fact that millions of illegal aliens freely operate
inside the United States, and the INS does little to enforce the laws
on the books regarding this problem. The book is important because it
presents an insiders view of enforcement operations at INS, especially
with regard to the Special Agents. We know a great deal about the
Border Patrol, and this book sheds some light on interior enforcement
compared with the apparent misconceptions.

Law Enforcement and the INS, second edition: A Participant Observation Study of Control Agents
by George Weissinger
Graduate School of Arts & Science , 1982
nonfiction : 2005
isbn : 0-7618-2996-2
This
study utilizes the perceptions of criminal investigators of the
Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) to describe the normative
structure of an organization in its social context. The legacy INS
attempted to provide both a service and control function. This dual
mandate made it difficult for INS investigators to fulfill their
mission of interior enforcement of the immigration laws. Other problems
included organizational relations, as well as notions about
professionalism, which affected recruitment, retention, training, and
worker expectations. On March 1, 2003, the INS separated its dual
mandate and moved to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with the
intent of solving some of these problems. As a result, one might assume
that the fundamental contradiction imposed by the dual-mandate
structure would be resolved. The updated material in this edition
discusses that prospect and includes statistical analyses of a sample
of apprehended aliens, as well as the Survey of Inmates from the Bureau
of Justice Statistics for information on foreign-born criminals. The
data file on apprehended aliens is available for download for
purchasers of the book. Current interior enforcement strategies are
discussed in an interview with the Special Agent in Charge of the New
York DHS office.

officials, whether they’re new to municipal finance or experienced, as
they work with broker/dealers, bond counsel, financial advisors and
others involved in bring-ing new debt issues to the public markets.

in an easy-to-read style without sacrificing detailed content, the book

individual investors who are looking for a more sophisticated guide.
In

latest municipal market trends, such as:
· The impact of technology and e-commerce on municipal bond trading

Designed
as a basic reference, the book provides an overview of the municipal
market and the basics of municipal securities with chapters devoted to
the issuers, the primary market, the secondary market, investing in
bonds, credit analysis, understanding interest rates, regulatory and
disclosure requirements, and financial products.
Fundamentals
includes a variety of useful tables, charts and graphs, such as a
his-torical chart on placement ratios, an indicator of bond demand,
during the past decade a table showing municipal securities as a
percentage of open and closed-end mutual funds and money markets since
1976 the credit agencies’ rating scales and a chart showing how each
state treats municipal bond interest income for tax purposes.
According
to James A. Lebenthal, chairman of Lebenthal & Co., Fundamentals is
“…simply the most comprehensive, useful, look-it-up book on municipal
bonds I’ve ever read.” Adding another perspective, Professor Mitchell
Moss, Henry Hart Rice professor of Urban Planning and Director, Taub
Urban Research Center, Robert F. Wagner Gradu-ate School of Public
Service, New York University, said: “This is an important book, one
that will be required reading for professionals responsible for
planning, designing and evaluating publicly financed projects – the
health care, transportation and educational facilities that all
citizens rely upon.”
As the trade group for domestic and
international broker/dealer firms and banks that underwrite, trade and
sell bonds domestically and internationally, the Association drew on
the in-depth knowledge of the Association’s members, legal specialists
and other market professionals in updating the fifth edition.
Written
for the Association by Judy Wesalo Temel, the book reflects her
exten-sive knowledge of the market based on her career at broker-dealer
firms, such as Gold-man, Sachs & Co., and at one of the nation’s
largest municipal issuers, New York City.
