Welcome, NYU Class of 2017!

On August 25, the class of 2017 kicked off their journey at NYU with Move-In Day and the highly anticipated Welcome Week. The more than 300 programs offered during their first week on campus included a welcome from President John Sexton; hypnotist, a capella, and comedy shows; a casino night; a social media scavenger hunt; and the Glo Ball.

On paper, this year's freshmen class continues NYU’s legacy of excellence. Members of the class of 2017 were selected from more than 48,000 applicants for admission, a University record since being founded in 1831. From the 32% of students admitted, just over 5,200 freshmen enrolled as students at the Washington Square campus, with roughly 250 spending their freshman year in Florence, London, or Paris.

Additionally,

  • The majority of NYU’s class of 2017 graduated in the top 10% of their high school classes with a median SAT score of a 2030 and a median ACT score of a 30.
  • This year's class is the most internationally diverse to ever enroll at NYU. 18% are citizens of countries other than the United States—even more are dual citizens, permanent residents, and students who were schooled abroad. Further, NYU freshmen this year come from a record-breaking 87 different countries.
  • The NYU class of 2017 is the most ethnically diverse in recent history, and NYU continues to be one of the few elite universities in the United States with no ethnic majority on campus. Five percent are African American, 5% are bi- or multi-racial; 29% are Asian or Asian American, 38% are white, and 13% are Latino— the largest number and percentage of Latino students to ever enroll at NYU.
  • 17% of NYU freshmen will be the first generation in their families to attend a university and receive a bachelor's degree.
  • 48 states are represented this year, while 16% of freshmen are from the New York metropolitan area, and just 9% are from Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island.

For those interested in getting to know the incoming class (and future fellow alumni) on a more personal level, HashtagNYU asked students to participate in “One Word. One World.,” an annual contest for new students to introduce themselves online. Members of the class of 2017 were asked to submit a photo or video that tells the world who they are, using the one word that best describes them. Heeding the call, incoming students from 43 countries on six continents participated.  Watch the video below to see the finalists.
